Mourning the loss of my Mega Hits...

Ever since I left the dinosaur-like state of dial up and switched to a cable modem my online experience has been simply amazing. I had no idea videos could be so seamless, webpages now load at breakneck speed and I can actually send an email without waiting for that damn hourglass to disappear in a moment's time. I was also thrilled that my new digital cable came with a myriad of choices in video entertainment that I had never experienced with my ghetto basic set up. One of my most beloved channels was VH1 Mega Hits, for you Adelphia subscribers you'd know it better as channel 155. I readily admit that I'd sit for hours on end sometimes watching all the videos rotate that were so much more entertaining than anything that MTV had to offer and was always the first place I'd see new Garbage vids! My friend Sofi and I would often be talking online late at night and IM each other with cries of "OMG Mega Hits..NOW" and enjoy the latest technicolor explosion. At times they'd show commercialized stuff but when I was healing from surgery and off work for 3 weeks back in November that was really one of the only channels I kept as a constant selection. They didn't have any lame ass reality crap--just straight up videos from a mix of artists. I got a notice from Adelphia informing me that Mega Hits was going to be purchased by some bigwig MTV outfit later this summer and in the blink of an eye was transformed overnight into LOGO which is gay and lesbian programming. I've been a self-proclaimed fag hag from my earliest memory on this earth and when I learned that this new station was in the works it made me happier than a drag queen at a Madonna-thon convention! How cool is a station that actually shows such classics as Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Torch Song Trilogy and Heavenly Creatures as well as featurettes on the best gay discos worldwide and a campy committment ceremony offering that rivals TLC's "A Wedding Story?" However, given the fact that I do have SEVERAL hundred channels on my premium cable, isn't it possible to keep my Mega Hits channel AND provide me with a groovy gay gala as well? L.A. is an entertainment mecca so why are they pulling the plug on a video network??? I haven't been this bummed since KDL folded and became Indie 103.1 and before I get bashed by all the kids who love that station this is the exact same point I've been trying to make since I started typing: that I love Indie 103.1 but I also loved KDL and why couldn't those two stations have been neighbors on the radio dial instead of an all or nothing takeover??? Maybe my friend Sofi and I were the only two people who cared about or even watched Mega Hits but I for one am disappointed that it's gone. There's a snowball's chance in hell of me ever seeing any quality videos on MTV since 120 Minutes and Alternative Nation have disappeared faster than a new supply of Lamb of God t-shirts at Hot Topic. Well I guess I can just console myself that the sole purpose of me getting digital cable was to have a faster and more user friendly internet experience including anything and everything relating to music so I'll just kick back in front of my monitor and watch videos that way. R.I.P. VH1 Mega Hits....

Melissa,
I'm in a Time Warner area, so I never even had the chance to become addicted to VH1 Megahits. However, I feel your pain. I miss music videos! Not only are MTV and VH1 trapped in the murky depths of reality tv, but now MTV2 plays repeats of MTV shows instead of videos! Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but anytime I do see a video it's part of some sort of crunk marathon and, as you know, I'm just not feeling the crunk thing. Fuse could have been an option, but every time I turn on that station, it's the cheesy Hot Topic Poster Girl (do you know who I'm talking about, she looks like she probably changed her name to something like Raevynn Wynter or Sanguine) doling out love advice in between Meshuggah videos. And then there is VH1 Classic. All videos, all the time, but one can only take so much Foreigner during the day, don't you think?

Raevynn Wynter.. wasn't that a Tori B-side?

Vh1 Classic fills the void left by 120 minutes with that new Alternative Hour..
4 Sisters Of Mercy Videos in a week!? No Mega Hit could top that..

The Alternative is my favorite video show, even if it is all old stuff. I saw the Ultravox's video for "Vienna" last month and was engrossed! It was alternately the cheesiest and best video I have ever seen.
There is a half-hour alternative video show on Fuse. I can't remember when it's on, so I rarely see it. Two weeks ago, though, they played the new one from Of Montreal, which looked like Marukami.
I don't know if Raevynn Wynter is a Tori thing. It's on the list of Ridiculous Goth Names that Balthazar Monsoon and I made up a while back. He's a big Tori fan, so maybe it is.

I know that Raevynn Wynter is not a Tori b-side, thought it's rather similar to Lisa Simpson's goth name of Raven Neversmiles.

Classic VH1's Alternative show is definitely one of my favorite shows and I love the 2 hour weekend editions along with "We Are The 80s" though I find it odd that they intermix the playlists. Also, while Eddie Trunk has taught me quite a bit through musical trivia Amy Scott needs to be fired IMMEDIATELY since she's yet to teach me any factoids that I didn't already know. Plus she tries to act like EVERY band on there is her favorite and I was literally embarrassed FOR her when she tried to interview New Order and they were all looking at her like she was completely bonkers--the same went for Erasure!

Steven's Rock on Fuse is another one that I'm liking more and more but tends to be a hit and miss situation depending on the selection of vids and live musical guests.

Why don't they start airing 120 Minutes reruns from the late 80s? That would be so amazingly cool!

I need my VH1 Mega Hits back really bad. I am so depressed that I can no longer turn on the TV and watch excellent Music Videos. I hate MTV Networks - they are stupid.

I feel your pain. I first discovered Mega-Hits in the summer of '03 after I graduated high school and would watch it every summer after that when I was on vacation from school. Then in 2005 I went to my mom's for a few weeks, came back and was mortified to see it had been discontinued. I saw Mega-Hits as a very integral part of my summer vacations because most channels during that period don't show anything decent. I would just have it in the background a lot of the time as I went about my duties around the house or as I was getting ready for work. Plus, I kept hearing new and interesting songs. A few of my CD mixes consist of music I discovered watching Mega-Hits. What I also loved, which is totally strange, were the little 10-second "interludes" between videos that advertised the station with alternative rock music playing in the background. Gah, that station is solely missed.
