Want Some Sugar?

Such is the shitty state of record-buying in Los Angeles that it took me almost four months to acquire "Sugar," the first single from Ladytron's upcoming third album, Witching Hour, even though we are home to the country's largest record store. Last week, at said record store, I found the 12" slab of vinyl. Of course, Ladytron's site is already boasting clips for a second single, "Destroy Everything You Touch," to be released in mid-September. (Is that only in the UK? Or do we count too?) But, let's not get too into griping, the point is that I now have my copy of "Sugar" and am left impressed.
Before Emperor Norton released Ladytron's debut, 604, I had the chance to interview the band for Outburn. This was somewhere in late-2000 or early-2001. I can't remember. Regardless, it was before the whole "electroclash" thing, before everyone became so self-consciously retro towards the 1980s. Even though there were synthesizers on the album and even though there was an obvious homage to Kraftwerk's "The Model," the decade of my childhood didn't really cross my mind. In fact, the first thing I thought of was Stereolab. The second was Broadcast. That was the basis of the article.
I mention this only because the whole retro-futurist, psychedelic thing is more apparent on "Sugar" than on any other Ladytron song I have heard. In fact, in some indescribable ways, this song reminds me of Shocking Blue's "Send Me a Postcard." (If you have seen Ladytron DJ, you probably have heard this song.) What might distinguish this from other Ladytron songs is the presence of guitars. Lots of big, acid guitars that make the back of your eyelids light up like a Spacemen 3 video when you are listening. The guitars are the most crucial element of the song, as it marks Ladytron's transition from super-hyped electro artists of 2002 and 2003 to rock band with serious crossover appeal (especially now that the band is on a major) in late-2005.

Comments:
When I hear "Sugar", the first thing that comes to mind is Psychocandy. It doesn't have enough of that classic Ladytron sound for me. "Destroy Everything You Touch" works better, as it combines their new direction with their own sound in a way that really works. I think you can get it from their Myspace page if anyone's interested.

Also, Liz, did Emperor Norton close down? If so, that's a shame. I've liked most of their catalog, but it seems that they haven't really put anything out since the last Felix LP.

^^^ Emperor Norton went bankrupt earlier this year.

You should watch the videos for both singles. Great stuff.

I'm going to take a moment to regress into fanboy mode and mention that I met Ladytron two years ago, backstage at Coachella. ^___^

"Sugar" came out at the perfect time for me because I've been obsessed with my jr. high/high school record collection of Ride, Lush, et. al. of late. Oh, yeah, and VH1 Classic keeps playing House of Love videos on the Alternative and so it's made me feel very dreamy and ethereal and other words that have been used to describe a Lush album.

It sucks that Emperor Norton went under. I know they had problems a few years ago and my contact there left, so I sort of lost touch on what was being released outside of the last Felix da Housecat album. Maybe that was the only thing the label released last year. I really don't know.

I think the ENorton name/releases left were taken over by Rykodisc (?)a few years back when they went kaput/got bought out... I believe the new Ladytron album was supposed to hit American shelves this week, but it looks like it's a "rest of the world" release right now...Island's probably hoping for "International Buzz" before dropping it here..
And "Sugar" has been out for about a year now - it was the single/on the soundtrack for some porn documentary last year. That's all the info I can think of right now. Toodles!

I have this album. . it's utterly amazing and a great evolution from Light and Magic. Very indie at heart, but the cold detached electronic delivery is pure Ladytron.
