This is frightening, especially for lovers of freedom. Don't get me wrong, i ain't no luddite, but isn't this an invasive (i.e. potentially illegal) use of technology?
 

Uh Yeah it is, Sony is gonna be slapped hard with major lawsuits (or we'll all cringe next time we pop a cd into our pc), you'd think they would have reasearched the reprocussions of a rootkit. All in the name of preventing piracy?

According to the EFF page, folks are planning class action suits in California and New York. I only have one of the cds on the list and haven't played it in my computer, but you might want to check the list of discs involved (on the EFF page) and see if you have any and have played them on your PC. Not being an attorney, I don't know all of the legalities of this, but I have been asking the legal eagles in my family about the issue. If you're interested, I suggest asking around as well and please let me know if you find anything.
