Legendary Pink Dots Online
Ed. Note: Four posts in a day may seem excessive, but when there is a huge fire close enough to cover your neighborhood with ash and force your university to evacuate, there isn't much else to do but watch the local stations play All Inferno All The Time.If you are a Legendary Pink Dots fan, then you know damned well how hard it is to keep up with Edward Ka-Spel's output. Between his band, solo work and other varied side projects and collaborations, it's near-impossible to try and compile a complete discography. On top of that, prices for LPD-related material can be pretty high, considering that so many releases are sold in limited quantities.
According to
Soleilmoon, it may be a bit easier to beef of that Pink Dots collection of yours now that Itunes features a few Ka-Spel releases. Included are:
Farewell the Milky Way; The Lovers; Asylum; Any Day Now; Island of Jewels; The Golden Age; El Kaleidoscopio Terminal; Textures of Illumina (Ka-Spel solo and an incomplete album at present. Also available on Itunes is LPD member The Silverman's
Requiem Settings 1-6.
For the record, I hope that
Crushed Velvet Apocalypse will be online soon, just so that you can all here its flawlessness. I recommend checking out
The Lovers, Any Day Now and
The Golden Age first.
Edited on 10/03/05: I looked through the Soleilmoon site and found that you can indeed download
Crushed Velvet Apocaplypse. If you are so inclined, please check out this
album. You will not be disappointed, particularly if you are a former goth with Stereolab-leanings and a penchant for heartbreak.
Lamacq Live Documentaries
Lately, I have become quite obsessive about BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq and his show
Lamacq Live. In addition to an excellent selection of music, each show airs a half-hour music
documentary. Last Monday's episode featured a piece on Homo Hop, which placed spotlights on local artist
Deadlee and PDP favorites,
Scream Club. If you have spare time, check out this and other docs on the website.
Words of Wisdom from Your Faithful Correspondent
Just because you were the guitarist in the ninth line-up of an obscure Scottish indie
band (scroll down to the middle of the page), doesn't mean that you won't someday be a bona fide
rockstar clad in Dior Homme.
It's Like Wilson Phillips with Edge
Looking through the list of up and coming local bands in today's Calendar Weekend section of the
LA Times, I couldn't help grow discouraged with the fact that, whenever these lists appear, there is a complete shortage of bands I actually dig. In all honesty, I don't even know who would make it on my list of recommended local bands, but it sure as hell would not include
The Like.
At first, I thought my dislike of The Like was a bit unfair. Perhaps I was just unwilling to give the ladies a chance because they are barely out of high school and have an obviously edge over the other million bands around town (i.e., they are from prominent music industry families). Maybe, I was just holding a grudge because they have, arguably, the stupidest band name ever created. I was wrong.
It's not that The Like suck. It sounds as though they can actually sing and play instruments. Then again,
American Idol contestants can actually sing too and look at what kind of crap that show produces.
Let's just get this out of the way: The Like are boring. By boring, I mean that the band sounds like Ben Lee on sedetives. It is music made specifically to be piped through the speakers at Starbucks. I hear that one song that Nic Harcourt is weak-in-the-knees over and imagine what the live shows must be like: a bunch of irritating, precocious teenagers from
Crossroads chaperoned by a pony-tailed, balding man and a middle-aged woman wearing her daughter's favorite outfit from Fred Segal, all of whom are pretending that the they are really moved to tears by the harmonies when really they are just that bored. I want to scream at the radio, "You aren't old enough to drink and you sound like you're ready to switch to O'Douls!" Where's the angst? Where's the teen rebellion? It's really quite tragic.

Bored in Brooklyn 04: Get Smart
Comrades, it's time to get your learning on.
Indie Night School is the brainchild of Tom Sean, guitarist and singer for locals (to me, anyway)
The Black Spoons. The premise is simple: even the most ardent DIY-er needs some help with the D'ing now and then. So the Indie Night School offers workshops on a host of music-management issues, from how to deal with lawyers to tips for organizing successful charity benefits to simply getting yourself booked at decent clubs. Guest speakers include band managers, promoters, bookers, and others who've been around the block once or twice or thrice - so you know they know what they're talking about.
You don't need me to tell you that talent and creativity alone will only get you so far in this world. Having some business savvy and preparedness can make all the difference. Check it out and email Tom for more information.
Three hours ahead, getting ready to leave the office, over and out.

Nightmare of You
I'm not one to click on the "cool" profiles on the front page of My Space, and that includes bands. There is just something that smells like a fishy advertising scheme that makes me back away and hold my nose.
I'll admit, I only clicked on the
Nightmare of You profile because I had read the name on a myriad of far hipper, hip music blogs mostly based in New York. Curiosity got the best of me.
Nightmare of You doesn't "Parklife" the vocals, but the group definitely sounds British in spite of the fact that it is based in the U.S. Other than that, I know nothing about this band, but it's worth a listen.

T.Raumschmiere Wants to be Your Friend!
Earlier today, just after getting home, I decided to listen to some records. After choosing
T.Raumschmiere's "Sick Like Me" single, I turned on my computer to check
MySpace. Funnily enough, I had a new friend request from
Mr. Haas himself. I looked at his profile and saw that he was currently on tour in the US, and that he's playing LA on October 5th at the
Knitting Factory. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door.
Needless to say, I accepted his request and now we're the best of friends.
As Autumn Approaches...
The Autumns have been one of my favorite LA bands for nearly a decade. (I even wrote about them for this
website last year. ) That said, I am really excited to hear that the band is currently working on new material. According to the website, the Autumns have finished seven songs and are in pre-production for another seven tracks. Should the recording process stick to schedule, a new album will be ready in early-2006. In the meantime, The Autumns are playing live this Saturday (10/01/05) at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. One certain PDP contributor (who knows full well who he is) saw the band play last week and really should mention something here about it, since he keeps on mentioning that he wants to post something every time I catch him on IM. If I make it out to the Troubadour this weekend, I'll update accordingly.
On a related note, if you are a ringtone-loving type, check out the band's ringtones
here.
Attention Annie Fans
Next month,
Annie, the Norwegian hipster chanteuse with a penchant for taking bubble-gum pop literally ("Chewing Gum"), joins the ranks of Trevor Jackson, Tiga, Erlend Oye and a slew of others who have released
DJ Kicks compilations through
!K7 records. The
e-card features the tracklisting, a video interview with Annie and contests. This compilation will feature two unreleased tracks, "The Wedding" and "Gimme Your Money." The former will also be featured on an upcoming download-only release,
Annie Digital EP, through I-tunes.
