New Year's Eve Options Part 7: Eternal and Wolfpack

Event: Eternal and Wolfpack

Live performance: Pins and Needles

DJs: Tony X, Doomie, Eric Dead, Job (M/R/X), Destrucktor & Assault, Frank H-Bomb (Das Bunker)

Location: Roberto's

Time: 9:30 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.

Cover: $7 before 10:30, $10 after

Age: 18+

Pros: The thing about the clubs at Roberto's is that the DJs play whatever the fuck they want. There is absolutely none of this play-the-hits bullshit and I doubt that will change just because it's New Year's Eve. Plus, there will be an (outdoor) fireworks display and free champagne to toast and free food courtesy of Doomie's Tacos.

Cons: It might be too goth for the folks in your posse.

About Town: We Love M/R/X

M/R/X-Wolfpack is hands down my favorite dance club/band night in Los Angeles. From the looks of it last Saturday, I'm not the only one with that opinion. It seems that the monthly post-goth (I think I just coined a term) party has at least doubled its crowd over the past year and the reasons why are obvious. Where else can you dance to a mix consisting of DAF, Siouxsie and the Banshees and some weird but wonderful new stuff from Germany that Job managed to find online somewhere? Where else can you catch artists like the New Collapse (RIP) and the Bubonic Plague in between the spooky mixes? Nowhere, I tell you.
Obsolete opened the night and quickly became a new favorite. She plays with harsh but minimal beats, sings kind of like Kathleen Hanna in her Julie Ruin phase and has a butler who stands in the corner of the stage throughout the show.
I had mixed feelings about locals Secret Society of the Sonic Six before this show. I bought the band's 12" for "J Ward" years ago, back when I was doing Transmission at the Parlour, and played it quite frequently on account of it being a total indie rock jam. Then I saw the band live and was left, well, let's just say it wasn't a great show. This time around, SSS6 were quite entertaining. Although the vocals were a little low, the singers traded off parts seamlessly and the bassist moved to a zombie groove like no other.
Headlining the night was San Francisco band Bronze. The sound is on the shoegaze-meets-techno tip, perhaps a bit like the Field or Ulrich Schnauss but with more of a Throbbing Gristle influence thrown in the mix. Singer Rob Spector can really belt out the tunes and, with a voice that's already filled with depth, the effects work to intensify the experience rather than rectify it.
I noticed in the ladies room that M/R/X-Wolfpack is throwing a New Year's Eve party this year. I'll post more details as I can gather them as it should be a good night.

Tonight

For those of you who are not planning to attending MSTRKRFT and John Digweed at Vanguard, I have a suggestion for you.

M/R/X

This is one of my favorite clubs in L.A. Job Leatherette and his cohorts play an exceptional mix of underground tunes and bring in some of the finest talent from parts unknown. Tonight The Parallelograms and Jean-Paul Yamamoto are playing live.
